Empty words on Mental Health

The Prime Minister has indicated that she wants to replace the 1983 Mental Health Act. This is a really important issue. There are good reasons to revisit the legislation passed over 30 years ago and examine what works and what needs to be changed. However, this is an especially complex piece of law with lots of built-in safeguards and checks and balances. The recent history of this governments approach to difficult law does not inspire confidence that enough parliamentary time will be dedicated to such a bill or that the input of experts will be heard and listened to.
